There is just something about that first day of Fall on Sept. 22 that screams “pumpkin everything” and to me, there is just nothing more festive than a pumpkin-spiced coffee.
Starbucks has had a strong-hold on the pumpkin-flavored drinks since it launched its first Pumpkin Spice Latte in 2003. But that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily the best and if you are someone who wants to go somewhere more local or just need to switch up your favorite coffee spot, San Antonio has plenty of places to curb that PSL craving.
It doesn’t matter whether you are one of those people who have been grabbing a Starbucks PSL since August or if you have been waiting until it was officially autumn because either way, it’s still hot enough in Texas you may want to grab that coffee iced.
One of the locals’ favorite South Side coffee shops, Folklores Coffee House has some of the best options for pumpkin lattes. Instead of the traditional PSL, Folklores offers several seasonal drinks including the Pumpkin Banana Cream Latte, a Dirty Pumpkin Latte and even a Pumpkin Churro Latte if you want to have a puro San Antonio coffee.
If you need a traditional yet basic pumpkin spice latte, try Halcyon which offers up the “Not Your Basic Pumpkin” drink that includes pumpkin pie puree into their recipe or one of Merit Coffee’s locations that has a Harvest Spice Latte with a homemade syrup with Mexican vanilla, nutmeg, ginger and oat milk.
Drink Tank offers customers another puro San Antonio option with their Pumpkin Spice Horchata Latte. The name says it all on this one.
You can also try Berry to Bean for their Pumpkin Pie Chai, a divine sip or get their Flannel Latter made with ginger, honey and cinnamon for a drink that makes you want to grab your sweater.
But if pumpkin isn’t your thing, you can still enjoy some seasonal drinks that include other great flavors of fall.
La Panaderia downtown has their signature Mexican Hot Chocolate that is to die for. It is made with traditional Mexican ingredients like piloncillo and Chocolate Abuelita to give it a unique and rich flavor that will have you begging to drink it cozied up next to a bonfire.
Cinnamon is also a hugely popular fall flavor and Mildfire Coffee Roasters offers a cinnamon roll latte that is made with brown sugar, butter and cinnamon. Who doesn’t want a coffee that tastes like a warm, homemade cinnamon roll?
A new personal favorite of mine is the Maple Praline iced latte from Shotgun Roasters that brings a true appreciation of the Fall. If you are wanting that pumpkin flavor though, they do have their Sweater Weather made with their house made pumpkin sauce or the Pumpkin Cheesecake.
Take a trip to the Southeast Side to Poetic Republic for their multitude of fall drink choices from their Mellow Latte with pumpkin spice syrup, their Maple Pecan Latte or their Brown Sugar Cinnamon Latte.
Really, you can’t escape the pumpkin spice explosion that happens every year, so order up!
