La Cantera is a bustling area filled with tons of restaurants, bars and entertainment, a perfect place for all ages. Whether you go for a shopping day or need a staycation, La Cantera has plenty to keep you occupied.
The district is home to some of San Antonio’s largest attractions, like the biggest open-air mall in the area, a giant amusement park and natural areas to suit all types of activities. Located on the NorthSide of San Antonio, the La Cantera area sits in between Helotes and Stone Oak and is just a stone’s throw from downtown or Boerne. It is also right off of the highway, so it is easily accessible for all travelers.
It is also one of the top places to live for young adults due to its proximity to the University of San Antonio Texas campus. Many post-grad young professionals tend to stay in the area at one of the luxury apartment complexes around La Cantera because they are still close to many major workplaces like USAA and the Medical Center while still being able to enjoy fun amenities.
Not only is La Cantera a great place to visit, but many of the places are also dog friendly so your four-legged friends can join in on the fun!
Here are some of our favorite things to do at La Cantera:
Go on a shopping spree: The Shops at La Cantera are the most popular attraction in the area as the open-air mall offers everything from shopping to restaurants to entertainment. Even if you don’t want to spend too much money, it is a good place to just go for a stroll around to do some window shopping. Or if you are looking to buy for all your needs there is an assortment of typical retailers mixed in with luxury stores like Louis Vuitton, Tory Burch and Quay Australia.
Grab a bite to eat: There are plenty of places to eat in the La Cantera District whether you want fine dining at Perry’s Steakhouse & Grille or just want to grab some bar bites at Yard House. There are a number of really cool locally owned places inside the shopping center like Whiskey Cake and Palenque Grill that offer some unique dining options and great ambience. If you don’t want a full meal, there is an abundance of other options from ice cream sandwiches to crepes and everything in between.
Have a day of play: Right next to The Shops at La Cantera is Six Flags Fiesta Texas to take the family or your friends to a day of rides and games. The giant Six Flags amusement park has dozens of different rides to take you upside down, sideways and every direction in between. They also have a water park open in the summer and they just opened Six Flags Fright Fest for the Halloween season to add some spooks to your fun!
Take a hike: Just a few miles from La Cantera are two great hiking areas to visit: Eisenhower Park and Friedrich Wilderness Park. Both areas are great places to take a break and disconnect in nature. Eisenhower has miles of trails with both paved and off-road options for any type of hiker and as a reward, Eisenhower has an observation tower that offers breathtaking views of downtown San Antonio. Friedrich is another great option for hikers of all skill levels to check out.
Sip some margs: One of the coolest places around the La Cantera area is the Tiny Cantina located in The Shops at La Cantera. It’s an outdoor kiosk that acts as a bar specializing in signature margaritas. You can get a margarita flight and try out their three popular flavors (cucumber, mangonada and strawberry swirl), grab a shot flight or get a normal margarita to sip while you shop or to sit and enjoy. And don’t worry, if you aren’t a tequila fan, they do have beer and non-alcoholic beverages available too.
Go on a staycation: If you need a little R&R, have yourself a self-care night or weekend, the La Cantera Resort and Spa offers a luxurious experience to have some fun and relax. Check out the golf course, the spa or the five heated pools on the resort property. Every room and suite also has views of the Texas Hill Country for an added experience.
Let out your inner kid: What is more fun than taking the kids (or the kids at heart) out for a day of play? There are tons of options to choose to get out and moving while still having fun. You can take a trip to Topgolf to play some fun golf games year-round! With a full restaurant and bar, Topgolf is ideal for all ages! Nearby, there is also Andretti Go Karting and Games for the trifecta of go karts, arcade games and Laser Tag. Need we say more?
