San Antonio is a great place for our four-legged companions and with the weather getting warmer, it is the opportune time to get out and check out some of the many dog parks the Alamo City has to offer.
Across the city there are lots of fun places to bring your pet from the dog-friendly bar scene to the Pearl Farmer’s Market, but if you are looking for a place to let your dog run free there are plenty of off-leash dog parks to visit.
But where should you take your furry friends for a roaring good time in San Antonio?
If you’re on the North Side, take a trip to the Alamo Heights Bark Park. Located near Alamo Heights baseball fields, the dog park is separated for large and small dogs so your dog can run around comfortably. This is one of the most popular dog parks in San Antonio so there are plenty of opportunities for your dog to socialize. Some of the main perks of the park is the water feature for your dog to splash around in and there is plenty of shade so you and your dog can both stay cool.
On the Northeast Side is Lady Bird Johnson Dog Park where there are activities for on-leash and off-leash dogs. This city-owned park has two separate areas for small and large dogs, plus an agility area so your pup can get some more exercise and training. Or, if you want a break from the off-leash activities, Lady Bird Johnson Dog Park has a .6-mile loop around the park to walk the trail system.
If you find yourself in the downtown area, check out the new Maverick Dog Park. Built in 2021, Maverick is a great option for your pet to have some fun while you get some relaxation time. With more than an acre of fenced off sections, your dog will have plenty of space to run to their little heart’s desire. It is a great option for those dog parents who want to take a load off and utilize the park’s new tables and seating spaces.
A local favorite, dog owners love Madison Square Dog Park for the security and open spaces it offers. A double security gate ensures your favorite companion won’t escape as people come in and out and there is a lot of space, though be warned, the ground is mostly wood chips so it may be rough for some sensitive paws. Many locals say it is also one of the cleanest dog parks in the city.
Another local favorite for dogs (and humans) is Phil Hardberger Park with not one but two off-leash dog parks to enjoy. There is even a two-story doghouse and other obstacles for your pup to explore! Don’t worry about your dog getting too hot, there is ample shade and some water fountains throughout the parks to keep you and your pet cool. And if you don’t want to keep your dog off-leash, there are plenty of trails in Phil Hardberger Park to go walking in as well with your dog and enjoy any time of the year.
