Five Top Rated School Districts in San Antonio

It’s August already, which means stores in San Antonio are filled with notebooks, backpacks and supplies as students prepare to go back to school. 

Many districts are starting earlier than usual this year with start dates ranging from Aug. 8 to Aug. 23.

In San Antonio there are 17 public school districts within the county limit, with more than 470,000 students enrolled in school in the 2020-2021 school year, according to the Texas Education Agency. 

Ahead of the start of school, Niche—an online platform that creates in-depth profiles on every school and college in America—publishes its list of the best school districts in the area for the year. Looking at factors such as state test scores, college readiness, graduation rates, SAT/ACT scores, teacher quality and more Niche ranks the districts by using data from the U.S. Department of Education to analyze key statistics along with millions of reviews from students and parents.

Many of the highly rated districts in San Antonio wow their students and families with impressive teachers, high academic scores and an abundance of extracurricular activities that allow for opportunities outside of the classroom. 

These are some of the top ranked public school districts in San Antonio:

  1. Alamo Heights ISD:

Given an A+ rating from Niche, Alamo Heights ISD shines with high-quality teachers and college prep plus an abundance of opportunity for academic and extracurricular opportunities. Alamo Heights ISD has about 4,900 students with a 15 to 1 student-teacher ratio. It has a 97 percent graduation rate and more than 60 percent of students are proficient in math and reading.

  1. Boerne ISD:

Praised for its academics, activities and college prep, Boerne ISD is one of the best school districts in the area. Serving about 10,000 students, almost 70 percent are proficient in math and reading and nearly 100 percent graduate from high school. Students say that the community environment and the teachers makes Boerne ISD a desirable place.

Location: North of San Antonio

  1. Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD:

With an overall A rating from Niche, SCUCISD gets its top marks in diversity of the district as well as the clubs, activities and sports opportunities that the district provides. SCUCISD serves about 15,700 students from pre-K to 12th grade. Most students are proficient in reading and math with 96 percent of the seniors graduating high school. Students praise the community-feel of the district and say there is an abundance of opportunities for students to find what they love to do.

Location: Far Northeast San Antonio

  1. North East ISD:

The second largest school district in San Antonio, NEISD serves more than 60,000 students and is known for its diversity and college readiness. With an A- rating from Niche, many students say NEISD has great opportunities inside and outside of the classroom to learn and grow. More than half of students are proficient in reading and math and 92 percent of seniors graduate high school.

Location: North and northeast San Antonio

  1. Northside ISD

The largest school district in San Antonio, NISD is also one of the top rated due to its diversity, staff and activities offered to students. There are more than 100,000 students served in NISD with most of the students proficient in reading and math. Students praised the teachers and academic pathways available.

Location: North, northwest and west San Antonio
