San Antonio has seen some major population booms in recent years, it was ranked as the fastest
growing U.S. city in terms of numeric population growth in 2021-2022, according to data from the U.S.
Census Bureau. During that time, more than 13,000 people moved to San Antonio, drawn in by its
affordable housing and boom of major companies setting up shop in the Alamo City.
Because of this, San Antonio has really made itself an attractive option for young professionals who
want to move to a city with plenty to do and new employment opportunities. In San Antonio, the
median age is 33 years old, making it a great place for young people to settle. But the question becomes,
where are all the young people moving to in San Antonio?
We’ve rounded up some of the most popular neighborhoods for young professionals:
1. Tobin Hill-
Located just north of downtown, Tobin Hill is consistently rated one of the best places for young
professionals due to its proximity to much of the city’s most popular attractions and nightlife. It is
located next to the Pearl district and just outside of downtown, so there it is close to plenty of
restaurants, bars, coffee shops and hiking areas. Here, there is definitely no shortage of things to do.
A small percent of residences are made up of families with children so it is a great place for
singles and young couples.
Like Tobin Hill, Lavaca is a great place for young professionals who want an urban feel and who want to
be close to what’s happening in San Antonio. Located next to the historic King William district and just
southeast of the heart of downtown, Lavaca a solid option. Home prices in Lavaca vary almost as much as each
individual home, depending on updates and upkeep. Most residents are between the ages of 20 and 35 years old.
3. Terrell Hills-
Close to downtown and Alamo Heights, Terrell Hills is another great neighborhood for young
professionals who want a close community feel with high-end attractions like museums, upscale
restaurants and boutiques, and plenty of parks nearby. It is also close to Joint Base San Antonio-Fort
Sam Houston military base for those whose military careers have brought them to the Alamo City. There
are tons of youngsters here who want to be in a dense suburban setting, surrounded by other young
4. Oakland Estates-
For young professionals working in the medical field or some of San Antonio’s biggest companies like
USAA, Oakland Estates is a great spot to set up roots. Oakland Estates has an urban feel to it while being
close to San Antonio’s collection of hospitals and medical centers, plus is close to plenty of shopping and
restaurants at the Rim and La Cantera. There are also lots of parks to explore nearby and it is only about
15 minutes away from downtown. About 1/3 of residents are between 25 and 40 years old.
5. La Cantera-
Not all young professionals want to live downtown and many flock to residences in La Cantera for its
more low-key atmosphere that still offers plenty of options for nightlife, events and proximity to many
of San Antonio’s top attractions. It is also close to UTSA and major employers like Valero and USAA,
making it an easy commute for the post-grad individuals and workers alike. Plus, the La Cantera area is
close to Camp Bullis for the young professionals in the military sphere.
